Gas price FAQ

What is the average gas price in the U.S. today?
The current U.S. national average for regular gasoline is updated daily on this page using AAA statewide average data. Scroll to the top of the page to see today's figure and how it compares to recent weeks.

Which state has the highest gas prices right now?
Gas prices vary significantly by state due to taxes, refining requirements, and regional supply factors. The highest and lowest average state prices are displayed in the highlights section above the state rankings table, updated daily.

Why is gas so expensive in California?
California consistently ranks among the most expensive states for gasoline due to a combination of the highest state gas tax in the country, stricter clean fuel blend requirements that limit supply options, and higher refining and transportation costs. California also uses a unique fuel blend not used in other states, which reduces the number of refineries that can supply it.

Why are gas prices different in every state?
State gas taxes vary widely — from under 30 cents per gallon in some states to over 70 cents in others. Beyond taxes, factors include proximity to refineries, pipeline access, local environmental regulations, and regional market competition. These combine to create significant price differences even between neighboring states.

How often does the national average gas price change?
Gas prices can change daily based on crude oil markets, refinery output, seasonal demand, and geopolitical events. AAA updates its statewide averages daily, and this site reflects those updates as soon as they are available each morning.

What is a good gas price per gallon?
Good is relative to recent history and your region. As a general rule, prices more than 20 cents below the national average are considered favorable. Use the weekly and monthly comparison columns in the state table to quickly see whether your state's prices are trending up or down.

Does this site show diesel prices?
Currently Gas Prices Live tracks regular gasoline statewide averages. Diesel pricing and premium fuel tracking are planned for a future update.

How does crude oil price affect gas prices?
Crude oil is the largest single input cost for gasoline, typically representing 50–60% of the retail price. When WTI or Brent crude rises or falls, pump prices usually follow within a few weeks as refiners adjust. For live crude oil production data and current benchmark prices, see Oil Production Live.
